Metabolites Separation Services
There are uncountable products on the market with adverse side effects on health. Metabolites as natural products are considered an effective solution to reduce the use of unhealthy products[1]. Presently, metabolites have been utilized in various fields such as medicinal, colorant, aromatic and functional foods. In particular, metabolites play an important role in drug development and clinical diagnosis. However, metabolites are produced by the metabolic activity of people, plants, or microorganisms and are usually mixtures rather than pure substances. Metabolites separation is often the first step in the development and application of metabolites. The separation methods should be selected according to the physicochemical properties and biological stability of metabolites. A suitable separation method can reduce research costs and shorten the research period.

Our Technical Platforms
Alfa Chemistry has established a number of technical platforms for metabolites separation, including but not limited to the following.

Partition chromatography is a technique based on the component partition of a mixture between stationary and mobile phases. It has various types such as paper chromatography, gas-liquid chromatography, liquid-liquid chromatography, etc. Partition chromatography has high separation efficiency and can separate metabolites in a short period. Many metabolites can be separated by partition chromatography such as alkaloids, vitamins, hormones, etc.
- Adsorption chromatography
Adsorption chromatography is a technique that involves the separation of a chemical mixture based on the interaction of the adsorbate with the adsorbent. The mixture of gas or liquid gets separated when it passes over an adsorbent bed that adsorbs different compounds at different rates. Adsorption chromatography includes thin layer chromatography, column chromatography, and gas-solid chromatography. Many typical primary metabolites can be separated by adsorption chromatography.
- Ion exchange chromatography
Ion exchange chromatography is a technique that separates ions and polar molecules based on their affinity to ion exchangers. This separation technique exploits the phenomenon of association between the ionizable molecules present in the sample and oppositely charged resins attached to the stationary phase. Ion exchange chromatography has the advantage of high resolution and heavy capacity. It is suitable for the separation of charged metabolites.
- Reverse phase chromatography

Reverse phase chromatography is a technique using alkyl chains covalently bonded to stationary phase particles in order to create a hydrophobic stationary phase. This stationary phase has a strong affinity for hydrophobic or less polar compounds. The use of a hydrophobic stationary phase is essentially the reverse of normal phase chromatography, since the polarity of the mobile and stationary phases has been inverted. The advantage of reverse phase chromatography is the ability to use the selectivity of pH to improve the separation.
