Industry

Industry is a key part of a country's development and plays an important role in the progress of The Times. Studies have shown that metabolites help solve a large number of puzzles and challenges in industry. In the future, metabolites may make greater contributions and provide more possibilities for the development of industry.

Applications

Plant and microbial metabolites are related to the solution to industrial pollution problems and production of industrial raw materials or products. The following are two examples of metabolites used in industry.

  • Metal pollution control by plant metabolites

Many human and industrial activities require different metals. As a result, large amounts of metals are discharged into the effluents and soil and cause metal pollution. This poses potential risks to people and ecosystems. Some plant metabolites such as phenols, polyphenols, alkaloids, saponins, proteins, amino acids, polysaccharides and organic acids, have the capacity to bind to various metals. This is because these plant metabolites have hydroxyl, carboxyl, carbonyl, amino groups, and thiol groups, which contain atoms with lone pair electrons[1]. As plant metabolites pose minimal environmental risks, they can be used to remove and recover metals from effluents and soil, thus controlling metal pollution.

  • Biosurfactants production by microbial metabolites

There are many industrial raw materials or products derived from microbial metabolites because of their widespread stability and functionality in harsh environments. For example, the genus Planococcus is a halophilic bacterium known for the production of diverse secondary metabolites. The metabolites of Planococcus were used to product biosurfactants on a large scale in 2014[2]. They provide new raw materials for the development of personal care products, which are less toxic to normal cells compared with chemically synthesized surfactants.
